Sony launches a Portable Data Transmitter for stable and simple data workflows on location shoots

The PDT-FP1 is a camera companion with an external viewfinder, which enables low-latency live streaming and high-speed video and still image transfer over 5G networks

Weybridge, 22 February 2024 – Sony announces the launch of a new dedicated portable data transmitter, the PDT-FP1, that allows high-speed, low-latency video and still image data transport over 5G networks. When attached to a camera*[1], this wireless communication device will be used in situations where speed is required from image capture to delivery, broadcasting, and distribution, such as news or events photography and broadcast video production. It provides high-speed, low-latency, and stable mobile data communication over 5G networks, in outdoor or indoors environment, where Wi-Fi connection is unavailable, enabling efficient and simple workflows.

For data transfer, the device benefits from a unique antennae structure supporting a range of domestic, international and stand-alone 5G networks*[2]. It has a 6.1-inch OLED display and a cooling fan ensuring stable operation. It comes with an HDMI input, a LAN port, a USB Type-C® port, a USB Type-C charging terminal and a screw hole for mounting on a camera.

The applications of the PDT-FP1 are multiple, thanks to its powerful connectivity:

  • Media transfer and delivery when using the PDT-FP1 as a modem to transfer media to any FTP destination. It can also be used with Sony Creators’ Cloud for Enterprise app to transfer media from compatible Sony cameras to the PDT-FP1 then upload to Sony Cloud services*[3] such as Ci Media Cloud and C3 Portal using secure, robust and reliable transfer mechanisms. This frees up the media from the camera so it can be viewed and uploaded while the camera is packed away or is in use.
  • Live streaming from any connected camera using RTMP. For video distribution, the PDT-FP1 will enable a direct stream from a compatible camera*1 to a YouTube™ channel via USB based streaming and stable wireless 5G networks, freeing operators from constraints caused by filming or output locations.
  • Network monitoring: the dedicated app Network Visualiser allows users to visualize the network condition and communications conditions while shooting – ensuring that the content is being delivered to those that need to see it.

Main features

1. High-speed, low-latency communication, even overseas*2

  • With a unique antenna structure that optimizes communication, the PDT-FP1 supports a wide range of bands*2 such as domestic and international 5G sub6/mm Wave*[4], 5G standalone networks, and local 5G networks, realizing high-speed, low-latency communication.
  • In addition to a physical plug-in nano SIM card, the PDT-FP1 also supports an eSIM for dual SIM functionality. It is also possible to automatically select*[5] a line*[6] that is easy to connect to depending on the network conditions, and switch SIMs to transfer data.

2. Cooling fan and duct structure for stable continuous communication

  • A newly developed cooling fan prevents heat loss even in environments of up to 40 degrees*[7]. Furthermore, despite its slim body design, the PDT-FP1 has a duct-based structure that efficiently dissipates internal heat, further backing stable and continuous communication. Different operational modes, auto, cooling priority and silent priority, can be selected to accommodate as best to each location environment.

3. A simple data transfer workflow by linking with Sony cameras*2

“Camera wired connection” setting feature simplifies and shortens setup time.

  • The 6.1-inch OLED display can simultaneously display communication quality and file transmission status*[8]. The transfer status can be monitored during shooting so as not to miss a decisive shooting opportunity.
  • The PDT-FP1 is equipped with a LAN port, USB Type-C® terminal, and HDMI Type-A terminal as connection terminals for cameras*2. In addition, by using the Type-C charging terminal and an external power source, the PDT-FP1 can be used to stream and transfer data simultaneously.
  • The device shape is designed as a camera companion, and in addition to a screw hole for securing the camera and tripod, it also has a strap hole for attaching cable fixing accessories.
  • Built-in memory of 8GB (RAM)/256GB (ROM) and microSDXC support of up to 1TB enables high-speed processing and storage of large amounts of data.

Pricing and Availability

PDT-FP1 will be available in selected countries in Europe (Germany/UK/France/Spain/Denmark/Norway/Sweden/Finland) from May 2024 for approximately 1,300 Euros. Pre-orders for PDT-FP1 will begin from today.
